Engineering North America's Landmarks
Engineering North America's Landmarks
Reading Level: 3
Interest Level: 2-5
Iconic landmarks can be both functional and inspirational.
They can also be examples of engineering genius. This series outlines the
geologic, geographic, engineering, and environmental obstacles that had to be
overcome while constructing these historic sites. Special attention is given to
advances in technology that made these sites possible, and to the people whose
scientific creativity used that technology to achieve their goals.
Each Book
Contains:
? Historical background on the significance of each of these
landmarks
? A look at one engineering or technological facet that makes
each of these projects unique
? A chart that compares this landmark to
similar structures
? A sidebar on the engineers and their use of the
latest technology to bring the vision of these landmarks to reality
? A
fact box that details each of these sites by the numbers
? A quiz on the
design and construction of these landmarks
Curriculum
Connections:
? History, economics, science, geology, and geography are
combined within the C3 Framework for an interdisciplinary presentation of some
of North America's greatest engineering triumphs
? Problem-solving
skills are enhanced by the outlining of theory-to-practice scenarios in which
scientific knowledge is applied to overcome multiple challenges
? The story
of the building of each landmark is told while incorporating lessons in
engineering, technology, geography, and earth science that address NGSS goals
for introducing these concepts to all students in the elementary grades
?
Sidebars and bulleted materials are presented
in ways to enhance the comprehension of students with varying language
skills
